31 Dec. 2000
Chaos ensues on the gangway of the Tunisian ferry MV Carthage as police bundle several would-be illegal immigrants back onto the ship while a police officer (bottom R) fires a warning shot into the air in Valletta Harbour on December 31. Some 200 Tunisians were found without entry documents when they tried to enter Malta and clashed with police when they were refused entry. Some 70 of them escaped after they rushed the gates while the rest were forcibly returned to the ship. Police sources say they hoped to land in Malta from where they could be smuggled to Italy.
